The Monster Study

This piece was done with acrylic paint and is based on an unethical study conducted on children in the 1930s, dubbed the Monster Study by some because of how shocking it was. The study was designed to induce stuttering in children in order to prove the diagnosgenic theory of stuttering. The children did not begin stuttering, though many of them developed self esteem issues and became reluctant to speak at all. The image is meant to highlight the fear and inoccence of the children used in this study, and the mouths on the hands are meant to represent the diagnosogenic theory of stuttering.
