CKG is thrilled to be kicking off their fall line-up with Calgary’s Karin McGinn, the artist’s premier solo show at CKG.

In Virgo’s garden, the feminine and her myriad manifestations are presented center stage.  Each painting celebrates and reimagines a modern female archetype ~ she is playful, magical and in her power.

Humour is used throughout her narrative tableaux to subvert the challenging ideas she presents concerning feminism and sexuality. With that in mind, Karin McGinn (BFA '15, Fibre) creates a happy, celebratory feminine energy. It is also worth remarking that we don’t ever fully see “her,” but rather we get small glimpses via shadows and objects that work to form an idea of who she is.

Although McGinn is fairly new to the medium, she has fully embraced the dreamy effects of airbrushing as the ideal tool to illuminate the moments of magic realism/fantasy found in the spaces and objects she creates. At times erotic and always surreal, her imagery is simultaneously beautiful and monstrous.

Karin McGinn is a multidisciplinary artist and curator. She holds an MFA in Visual Arts from Emily Carr University and a BFA (with distinction) in Fibre from AUArts (formerly ACAD). Her art practice explores the poetics and politics of the body as a site to understand and express her ethnographic experiences living in this bodily container.
