SUNBURNT UNICORN is a powerful, 3D-animated fantasy film that's great for all ages.

Sunburnt Unicorn is a 3D animated feature currently touring the global film festival circuit, including a world premiere at the prestigious Annecy International Animation Film Festival last June. The film will have its Canadian premiere at this year’s Calgary International Film Festival. Written, directed and produced by Nick Johnson (BDes ‘13, Illustration and Assistant Professor, Visual Communications Illustration), its development and pre-production team were based in Alberta and included several AUArts alumni, including Sho Uehara (BDes ‘10, Illustration), Isabelle Ackroyd (BDes ‘20, Illustration) and Natasha Jensen (BFA ‘13, Drawing).

After his father crashes their car in the desert, Frankie (Diana Kaarina) wakes up to find himself alone and burnt to a crisp with a piece of windshield glass embedded in his forehead. As Frankie embarks on a journey to rescue his father from the clutches of the Cactus King, he is accompanied by a series of quirky and mysterious creatures who believe him to be The Mythical Unicorn of Legend. Thus begins a surreal voyage of wonder and terror, traversing alien landscapes, endless cracked earth, and deadly sandstorms.
