Boxed In
This piece illustrates the feeling of being "boxed in" by one's surroundings, either physical or metaphorical. Captive octopuses have been known to escape their tanks simply to explore their surroundings, and perhaps steal a little "snack" from neighboring tanks. But in practically every recorded case, the animal will return to its confines of its own free will. It recognizes that however restricted it may be by this tank, the place is safe, even pleasant compared to the potential danger of the world outside. This is a sentiment that many can relate to, the realization that maybe, leaving a comfortable situation in search of something new just isn't practical. Despite this common feeling, breaking out of this "box" is necessary to grow as individuals in both skill and our ability to be comfortable in uncomfortable situations. The process of creating this drypoint etching piece took me out of my own comfort zone, challenging me to create art using new and interesting techniques.
