The International IsleHaving a Chinese grandmother who loves to cook means that the international aisle in a regular supermarket is never enough for her dishes. Every so often, my family would visit the Asian supermarkets to stock up on certain vegetables, spices and seasonings. This painting is based off of a 0.5 picture, distorting the image to an almost fisheye perspective. This angle captures the shelves and widens the viewer's perspective of the supermarket. Although the subject seemingly has everything she needs in hand, her eyes are wandering off the frames of the canvas. She’s searching for something beyond the materialistic feel of these foods but rather the feeling of familiarity, of a home some thousands of kilometers away. |
