Swing!Swing! Is one of my first fully original creative works. It was inspired by a photograph I took of my hometown in Beijing, China of a father and his daughter at a park in front of the backdrop of a setting sun. Upon reviewing my photos for my trip to China, this picture caught my attention and I knew I wanted to capture the bold, powerful moment in a drawing. I chose to use charcoal pencil because I wanted to portray the drawing in its entirety by using contrasting yet simple shades that would not take away from the overall composition of the piece. I thought black and white would be powerful and contrasting colours that accurately portrayed the moment: the father, with his strong and broad back standing in the Center coloured in dark black shades to represent his status and leadership role to his daughter, and the setting sun in soft greys to capture the beauty of the moment and create a contrast to the foreground. I am really proud of the final piece, as I was able to learn a lot. It was a great test of patience as each pencil stroke required precision and correct pressure to create each line - simple by itself - and the thousands of lines I drew pieced together to create something beautiful. |
