Bigger Than Me Besides using a large wooden board that challenged me in creating a piece significantly larger than my others, I chose a concept that was also bigger than myself; the concept of time. In this piece, I used oil paints to illustrate my mother throughout her life, a so-called “timeline” conveyed in a few pictures. I wanted to continue my theme of painting family members in order for my family to be able to feel a wave of nostalgia as they look at them. This feeling of nostalgia can also be given to people who have no relation to me, but are still understanding of the concept of change. Therefore, I chose my mother as my reference for these images beginning with her as a child, then as a teenager, and finally as an adult with my own portrait painted beside her. This piece is an example of how we as individuals change over the years, but there are certain aspects about our appearances and personalities that stay the same, which is what you can see throughout this “time-line.” |
