DragonfliesOften, we scour the internet for references, making other people the muses of our pieces. With this artwork, I turned the camera towards myself and really thought about how I'd like to be depicted. Did I want to look bold? Elegant? Dramatic? Everything I tried seemed unnatural. Finally, I stopped forcing myself to pose, and just sat with a bouquet in my hand. The rest of the composition came naturally after that. My family is terrified of dragonflies, but I've always found their two sets of wings fascinating. In turn, I reinterpreted the traditional sense of a fairy. I also added another set of wings to enhance the piece with surrealist interest, and three also happens to be my favourite number. Finally, the complex and contrasting nature of my character is represented by immense delicate detailing and the interplay between green and pink. True to my nature, at last. |
