Go Fish, Sophie Vickerson artwork
Go Fish

This piece depicts a memory of when I was five years old, and visiting my aunt and uncle’s cabin with my family. I remember attempting to cheat at a game of Go Fish, peeking as subtly as I could at the other’s cards, but due to my limited understanding of the game, my attempts were futile. In this piece, I experimented with patterns and mark-making in this piece, done with lino, and boosted my composition by creating high contrast with the black ink. I allowed for some inconsistencies in the printing, creating a rougher, more organic appearance, in order to support the idea of memories being distorted and dreamlike, sometimes missing details or definition.
