Teenage AddictionThis piece is a stylized self-portrait depicting the struggles that have developed over my teenage years. It is based on my high school experience and understanding of fitting in, parties, peer pressure, and learning about my predisposed future I never agreed to. Many people say parties and social gatherings are key factors to getting the typical Western teenage experience, but this doesn’t take into account how susceptible we are to addiction. I have seen my friends, family, and myself fall into different addictions that all have their diverse individual struggles. I do not blame my inherited dispositions for my issues nor those who passed them along to me. It is an unfortunate obstacle that I have to face alone regardless of how many have gone through similar experiences. This piece is made to reflect the loneliness one can feel whilst dealing with addiction despite the vast numbers of others who have experienced similar issues. The light cast across the figure's body represents the insight others can see from one's outward appearance, but the dim bathroom manifests how much is not seen by others. |
