Alienation, Wanzhen Tang artwork and description
Alienation

The inspiration for this piece originates from Franz Kafka’s short story The Metamorphosis, which shows the story of a human transforming into a giant bug. While not being a cockroach, Alienation features a giant cicada with the goal of conveying the same message: isolation, but in a much more modern sense. This scene, taken from a picture of me and my friends on my phone, is meant to convey the feelings of being shunned from one’s own group and of being ‘an alien.’ It shows how in maturity, friend groups fall apart, emotions become distant and people start to separate. In fact, I no longer speak to any of the individuals represented in this painting.
