Out of reach

This piece is an acrylic on canvas painting that depicts my childhood longing to have a better home. When I was younger, my family was very poor and we always lived in apartment buildings that had a lot of problems. One we stayed in for a few years was so covered in mold that my mother had to wash all the walls with bleach every day. We weren't allowed to play outside because it was dangerous, and the buildings that surrounded ours were filled with drug dealers, homeless people or other poor families. I didn't understand that the apartment was all my parents could afford, and longed for a different home. What I imagined a safe home would look like was nestled in a gated community like this one, surrounded by beautiful scenery and lush green forest. I wanted to feel safe, and imagined the houses in communities all surrounded by vibrant and colourful trees to be like a warm embrace that could protect people from everything.
