Grandmas Pocket, Laine Merkur artwork and description
Grandmas Pocket

"Grandma’s Pocket" is a representation of personal childhood memories and family connection. It honours the loving grandmothers I was so fortunate to grow up with on both sides of my family. Candy is a symbol of simple happiness in the same way my grandmothers’ love is pure and unconditional. The candy is broken and crumpled to show that grandmothers often hold candy in a coat pocket for a long time for the moments when a grandchild might need that simple sweet expression of love.  To create this piece I first took a photograph of the candy.  I played with the lighting to cohesively bring all the candies together. Once I had my reference I decided to capture the image realistically because the candy had such attractive colours and dimension. It is created entirely of colored pencil; a medium used throughout childhood.
