"The Maiden" Screening

MDFF Distribution, in partnership with Telefilm, The Talent Fund and AUArts, presents a special pre-theatrical screening of Graham Foy's "The Maiden."

Please join us before the film for a catered reception where a gallery of commissioned film posters created by current AUArts students will also be displayed to coincide with the screening. Cast and crew will participate in a Q & A after the screening.

The Maiden will open theatrically across Canada in April/May 2023.

Film Synopsis: A perfect summer day ends in tragedy, weaving a cosmic connection between three suburban teenagers. Best friends Colton and Kyle (Jackson Sluiter, AUArts student) float the river, trade dreams, and spray paint in the local ravine. Like the boys, Whitney explores the ravine, seeking solace by writing and drawing in her diary. But when her best friend abandons her, Whitney disappears. The kids’ lives swirl with natural wonder and beauty, but darkness and death loom not far behind. The discovery of Whitney’s diary transports us to a mirror world. A magical ravine. A paranormal encounter. The return of a dead black cat. Is this a dream? The afterlife? Once deeply connected, are we ever really alone?

The Maiden was filmed in Calgary and features a local cast. It has screened internationally at film festivals, including the Venice International Film Festival (Giornate degli Autori), Toronto International Film Festival, Calgary International Film Festival, Vancouver International Film Festival, Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, Sao Paolo International Film Festival, and Mannheim / Heidelberg International Film Festival.
