Red Dress Day
May 5 is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+.
Known as Red Dress Day, May 5 honours the thousands of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, Two-Spirit and gender-diverse people in Canada by encouraging learning and building awareness to end violence against these groups.
What can you do to act?
- Wear red on May 5.
- Join our Teaching and Beading Workshop at the Main Campus entry from 1 to 2 p.m. Lucille Wright (Siksika Nation member, community leader, knowledge holder and entrepreneur) will speak on recognizing this day and paying respect to the lives lost or harmed due to gender-based violence and its impacts on the community. Lucille will walk participants through creating a beaded Red Dress pin, showcasing that beadwork is a tool to help with individual and collective trauma and healing.
- Bring or donate a red dress to the AUArts Red Dress installation. You may drop off at the Lodgepole Center or the Student Services Hub (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) from May 1 to 4. If you would like your dress returned, please attach your name to the inside of the dress with a pin. If you want to donate the dress, we will happily accept this donation.
