Reception - Richard Clements: Cloister

Learn more

Richard Clements (Assistant Professor, Sculpture) is a Calgary/Mohkinstsis-based artist primarily working in sculpture.

His work is concerned with structural affinities between perception – as guided by language and mathematics – and our manifested cultural world. Cloister examines medieval architecture, contemporary currency, ancient form lines, taxonomies and archetypal symbols and how these – in mirroring our thought – calcify our shared hegemonic beliefs.

In collaboration with Marina Fischer, the Curator of Numismatics, the artist selected artifacts from the coin collection to show alongside a series of related works and studies.
