Artist Led Workshop | Heather Shillinglaw

Make a ᒥᐦᑭᓈᕁ ᓴᑳᐢᑲᐧᐦᐅᐣ mihkinâhk sakâskwahon (turtle pin) with AUArts Alum Heather Shillinglaw inspired by the exhibition "Miyotamon Nananis".

Join AUArts Alum Heather Shillinglaw, BFA '96 Drawing in making a turtle pin inspired by her solo exhibition "Miyotamon Nananis - it is a good road in all directions" on at the Alberta Craft Council Discovery Gallery.

This exciting project is inspired from Heather’s mother - elder Shirley Norris-Shillinglaw from the LeGoff Indian Reserve’s - teachings of; ᒥᓂᐢᑎᐠ ᒥᐦᑭᓈᕁ Ministik Mihkinâhk - turtle island Nehiyaw/Cree language.

Using new and salvaged elements from the artists studio process, attendees will construct and embellish their own individual turtle pin using techniques such as needle felting, embroidery, and beading. You will learn about the techniques Shillinglaw uses in the creation of your turtle.

Come stitch, felt, and bead to make your own turtle pin! As part of the workshop Shillinglaw will explain how the turtle is connected to her works and provide gradual step by step instructions, adaptable for all skill levels.

This two-hour workshop takes place on Saturday May 21 at 1:30 pm in the Edmonton location of the Alberta Craft Council Discovery Gallery located at 10186-106 Street in downtown Edmonton. Free customer parking is available in the lot behind our shop.

Each participant will be supplied with the materials and tools needed to make their pin. Adults and children aged 9 and older with an accompanying adult, are welcome to register.

For the safety of everyone, participants are required to wear a mask for the duration of the event.
