Before joining the team at AUArts, Monique was Executive Director and CEO of several social profit organizations in Calgary, AB and Halifax, NS, focused on children, families, homelessness, domestic violence, crime prevention and addictions.

Monique Auffrey, Counsellor

Monique is a registered social worker (RSW) with a background in trauma work. She was appointed to the Alberta Family Violence Death Review Committee by the Alberta Government Minister of Child and Family Services in 2017 for a 4-year term and sits as an advisory member of the Global Institute of Social Work (GISW), Pro Bono Students Canada (PBSC) and has been a board member of the Commonwealth Organization for Social Work (COSW) since 2008.

“My most important work has always been on the front line, working on mitigating the negative effects of adverse (childhood) experiences while helping to build resilience in families, communities and most especially with youth.”

Auffrey joins the team with the following achievements under her belt:

  • She introduced Canada’s first youth cyber safety curriculum called Keeping Kids Safe in a Cyber World, Family SOS, 2010.
  • Launched the photographic exhibit, "She’s So Brave" campaign curated by West Village Marketing, Glenbow Museum, 2017.
  • Winner of the Women of Inspiration Catalyst for Change Universal Women’s Network 2020, CTV Inspired Albertan, 2015 and The Raoul Leger Memorial Humanitarian Award, Dalhousie University, 2003.
  • Former board member of Propellus, Pathways to Education Canada and the former chair of the social justice committee of the Nova Scotia Association of Social Work.

Before becoming a social worker, Monique worked in education, supporting children with special needs. She has taught as a sessional instructor at Dalhousie University in the faculty of Social Work, BSW and MSW level courses. She has published on Housing First, women fleeing domestic violence and fertility tourism. A proud Acadian from NB, she plays the spoons badly. You can find her on Twitter and LinkedIn.
