The MNG is named after Marion Florence Nicoll (1909–1985), known for being one of Alberta’s first abstract painters. In 1933, Nicoll became the first female instructor at AUArts (then known as the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art). A recent book, Marion Nicoll: Science and Alchemy(external link), chronicles Nicoll's life and development as an artist.
