AUArts Alum Sikapinakii Low Horn crowned First Nations Princess

AUArts Alum Sikapinakii Low Horn, BFA '19, Drawing, of Siksika First Nation has been crowned the 2022 Calgary Stampede First Nations Princess.

After a month-long competition that includes traditional dance, public speaking, cultural knowledge and personal interviews, the Calgary Stampede named Sikapinakii Low Horn the 2022 First Nations Princess.

Low Horn graduated from Alberta University of the Arts in 2019 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in drawing with distinction. They create artwork reflecting their identity, the Blackfoot Culture, stories told, and Indigenous issues. Drawing allows a platform for their voice as an Indigenous person, as well as discussing the culture, history, and issues that go on into Indigenous communities.

Being chosen as this year's First Nations Princess is in and of itself an act of reconciliation, said Low Horn. They hope to use their new platform to act as a role model utilizing their talents as a storyteller.

As an ambassador for Elbow River Camp, Treaty 7 First Nations, and the Calgary Stampede, the First Nations Princess will attend over 300 events in the next year including joining students in a classroom, speaking to crowds, and sharing traditional dances.

This year the Calgary Stampede royalty will consist of the First Nations Princess and Stampede Princess.
