Call for Applications
The Alberta University of the Arts is one of the best equipped, purpose-built universities of art, craft, and design in North America, offering facilities for ceramics, glass, drawing, fibre, jewellery, painting, print media, photography, media arts, sculpture, and visual communication. The AUArts Summer Residency Program is inclusive of diverse practices that may be defined as fine art, design, craft and text-based, but it is not limited to just these practice areas. We welcome your creativity!

Glass Self-directed Residency
The Glass Self-Directed Residency is offered in conjunction with the AUArts Summer Residency Program. This residency offers supervised access to the hotshop and coldshops during designated times throughout the month of May. Participants may practice skills or develop projects.
Session A - May 7-28
- Sundays only 11:00am to 5:00pm
- 24 hours hotshop and 12 hours coldshop time
- 4 resident spots available
Session B - May 4-25
- Thursdays only 5:30 to 9:30pm
- 16 hours hotshop and 8 hours coldshop time
- 4 resident spots available
NOTE: Residents who wish to work as a team may share a resident spot and each pay 50% of the residency fee. Alternatively, a resident may choose to work with a qualified hotshop assistant who will be non-paying and in this case the resident will pay 100% of the residency fee. The qualified assistant must meet the Self-directed Residency Requirement stated below.
Conditions and limitations
Scope of work, materials usage and annealing cycles will be limited due to the condensed residency period. Work that cannot be accomplished in the residency includes large scale castings and annealing cycles for complex, large or thick work. Inquiries regarding possible projects and studio limitations should be addressed to the Glass Educational Art Technician in advance of applying to this program. lisa.cerny@auarts.ca
Self-directed Residency Requirement
- An applicant must have taken at least two AUArts glassblowing courses and/or have a demonstrated proficiency working in a hotshop facility.
You are encouraged to apply if you are:
- a community artist or AUArts Alumni
- an AUArts student graduating in 2023
- an AUArts student entering their 4th year of study in Fall 2023 or who is currently in their 4th year of study

- Residents are expected to provide their own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in order to work in studio facilities. This may include but is not limited to non-flammable clothing, safety glasses, closed toe shoes, and respirators.
- Equipment and some materials are provided. These include all hotshop and coldshop equipment, glass cullet and torch gases.
- Other consumable materials such as coloured glass, grinding grit or specialized equipment are not included in the residency fee.
- Additional charges may apply for studio material share fees. These will be assessed by the technician and are payable at the Bookstore.
- AUArts Bookstore and Luke Lindoe Library are open during regular business hours during the summer.
Selection Criteria
Selection to participate in the residency is based the nature and scope of your research project proposal and your work samples.
