Remakes, Variations (1741 - 2049)

Tim Lee

The IKG presents Remakes, Variations (1741-2049), an exhibition of recent works by 2008 Sobey Art Award winning artist Tim Lee.

Thematically oriented around the premise of remaking artworks that, likewise, are remakes themselves, the exhibition features twin bodies of work that both replicate and re-imagine seminal moments in slapstick comedy and classical music. With sources that range from Johann Sebastian Bach to Glenn Gould, and Peter Sellers to Steve Martin, Lee suggestively interpolates himself with the history of his subjects by loosely reconstructing specific works associated with their creators; and, in so doing, maps out an extended timeline that travels from the historical past to the imagined future.

Lee's practice spans video, photography and sculpture, and employs unique thematic combinations, often involving humour and slapstick comedy, to draw out relationships between art history, popular culture and social politics. Remakes, Variations (1741-2049) will be accompanied by the first major monograph on Tim Lee's practice. It includes texts by Frieze Magazine associate editor Jorg Heiser, CCA Wattis Institute Director, Jens Hoffmann, Berlin-based independent curator Monika Swewczyk, and Vancouver author Michael Turner.

Curated by Reid Shier.
