Gabriela Garcia-Luna

Gabriela García-Luna is a photo-based artist born in Mexico City, and living in Canada. García-Luna's work explores the paradoxical possibilities inherent to photography: to show the seen and reveal the unseen.  

Since 1999 the García-Luna has exhibited photographic and installation works in: Summa., Museo del Carmen, Mexico City (2003), Vulnerables., Galería Arte Alterno, Oaxaca (2004), Speak/Memory, Moose Jaw Museum & Art Gallery (2009), MIND THE GAP!  Dunlop Art Gallery, Regina & Art Gallery of Ottawa (2010-12).  

In 2001 she was awarded First Prize in Photography in the Guadalajara Omnilife Grand Prize, Mexico and in 2002 the First Prize in Photography in the Queretaro Libertad Third Art Contest, Mexico. By 2003 García-Luna received a photographic project grant for The Banff Centre, through FONCA (National Foundation for Culture and Art Fellowship - Mexico) and in 2007 was the recipient of an Artist in Residency grant at La Chambre Blance, Quebec City, through FONCA/CALQ (Conseil des Arts et Lettres du Quebec), to realize an installation work. In 2010 she received an Independent Artist Grant from the Saskatchewan Arts Board to realize a photo-based project, and in 2011 was the recipient of a grant through FONCA, Mexico and The Banff Centre to realize a photographic project at The Banff Centre. One of the most influential experiences in García-Luna’s life was traveling to India for the first time in 2000. She continues to visit India for a few months of the year to realize self-directed studies, which have had a strong impact on her work.
