Before the Land, Behind the Camera

Before the Land, Behind the Camera identifies current issues relating to landscape photography today and
highlights the philosophical and technical approaches of twenty-three photographers from across Canada.

Before the Land, Behind the Camera, identifies current issues relating to landscape photography today and highlights the philosophical and technical approaches of twenty-three photographers from across Canada. Some photographers portray nature as a place of retreat, refuge or renewal, while others question the idea of nature as an enduring, powerful force in the face of technology. Three self-guided tours introduce viewers to the various issues: Time and the Photograph explores the relation between image, time, experience and change. More than Meets the Eye reveals how a photograph is understood within a cultural and aesthetic context. Panorama shows how photographers make use of this horizontal format to remind us that the land is constrained by technology, population growth and environmental abuse.
