Stephen Andrews in conversation with Glenn Ligon
Visiting Artist Talk
Stephen Andrews' paintings, drawings and prints are unsettling for the manner in which they suggest the manipulative potential of mass media reportage. Car crashes, military ground exercises, deer caught in head lights or mass social events suggest the impossibility of knowing the circumstances and contexts of what they depict. Media depictions, like those of the artist, are mediated, generative photographic evidence.
Glenn Ligon is a New York based artist and long time friend and colleague of Andrews. his work combines painting, photography, text and web-based practices to address issues of historical representation and racial and sexual identity.
