Greeting the Anthropocene

craig campbell

The IKG is seeking students to participate in a card making and exchange workshop facilitated by Craig Campbell, and in conjunction with Christina Battle’s exhibition, how to feel the weight of the moment (a series of repetitions and speculations).

Imagine if, in the greeting card aisle at your local pharmacy or grocery store, situated somewhere between generic “Congratulations” and “Good Luck,” there was a special section for “Climate Catastrophe” cards. How do we address each other amid events on a more global scale? No arrangement of cards exists for general catastrophes like floods, forced migrations, civil conflict, wildfire: the increasingly-present signs associated with global warming. And yet in the midst of these admittedly ‘big’ things we go about our everyday lives. We still need to get up in the morning, we still buy eggs from the market, we still notice a pleasant breeze in the air or a cluster of birds in a field. Enduring in times of challenge often looks very much like any other day, even if how we feel inside is profoundly different. This condition requires a similarly intimate, human response, in addition to the structural changes that are so urgently needed.

Participants will work with Craig over email in advance of the workshop to brainstorm and plan their designs. Together with Craig Campbell and AUArts Print Technician, Megan Kirk we will print the cards using the letterpress.

We encourage those interested in the air we breathe to also participate in the air we breathe as they will be dealing with similar issues and concerns, however you do not need to participate in both.
