This past summer, four Alberta University of the Arts (AUArts) students had the incredible opportunity to immerse themselves in Czech culture, language and history through a prestigious scholarship program. Thanks to a partnership between the Government of Alberta and the Czech government, AUArts students Kate Hrap, Andrew Bornstein, Cindy Do and Alicia Copstein Mercado were awarded a competitive scholarship to attend the Summer School of Slavonic Studies in the Czech Republic.
Organized by the Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, the program offers scholarships to Alberta post-secondary students who wish to deepen their understanding of Slavonic culture. Students can attend summer programs in three vibrant Czech cities: Prague, Brno or Poděbrady. The scholarship covered everything from tuition and accommodation to meals and trips.
We caught up with the scholarship recipients to hear about their unique experiences.
Q: What motivated you to apply for the Summer School of Slavonic Studies scholarship?
“The opportunity to learn a new language and experience a different culture in my dream city, Prague, was so irresistible.” - Cindy
Kate was focused on embracing opportunities at AUArts, applying despite thinking it was a long shot, knowing it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
For Cindy, the allure of learning a new language while immersing herself in the culture of her dream city, Prague, was irresistible.
And Alicia was drawn to the scholarship’s comprehensive coverage of tuition, accommodation and excursions, making it a financially accessible way to explore the Czech Republic.
Q: Tell me about some of your favourite experiences from the program.
When asked about their favorite experiences, the students shared memorable highlights.
“I loved meeting all my classmates from around the world, as well as the amazing Czech locals. It was amazing to be placed somewhere so small and local ... I really fell in love with the country and the people there.” - Kate
Cindy cherished meeting new friends, immersing herself in Czech culture and discovering the beauty of the country.
Alicia enjoyed connecting with students from diverse academic backgrounds and interacting with locals, whether at tourist spots, restaurants or pubs.
For Kate, the close-knit community and the rewarding challenge of adapting to local life stood out. She found it fulfilling to engage with Czech locals, eventually feeling at home in a small, local town, which deepened her love for the country.
Q: How did this travel experience change your perspective or enhance your educational journey?
The students’ time in the Czech Republic had a profound impact on their educational journeys and perspectives.
"I always think broadening your horizons and experiences is a good idea. It's a good way to build confidence in yourself as you face something unknown and succeed. I am so grateful for this experience, and all it taught me in and out of the classroom.” - Kate
Alicia found learning Czech and other Slavic languages a rewarding challenge, while the country's rich history inspired her to explore its cultural roots.
Cindy was captivated by the country’s Gothic architecture, vibrant street art and vast array of museums, which pushed her out of her comfort zone and expanded her artistic vision.
For Kate, the experience reinforced the value of stepping into the unknown, boosting her confidence and teaching her valuable lessons both inside and outside the classroom.
From connecting with peers from around the world to deepening their understanding of Czech culture, the experience left a lasting impact on the students’ academic and personal journeys. Each left with unforgettable memories, a broadened perspective and a deeper appreciation for the country and its rich heritage.
