Jocelyn McHugh

Canadian fibre artist and educator

Jocelyn McHugh Profile Image

Jocelyn McHugh is a Calgary-based interdisciplinary artist with a focus on fibre. She graduated with distinction from the Alberta University of the Arts in 2024, where she received the Board of Governors’ Award, the Rachel Cameron Award, and the Jason Lang Scholarship.

Rooted in her rural upbringing, Jocelyn’s practice is shaped by values of practicality, repetition, and resourcefulness. Growing up feeding animals and operating machinery, she developed a deep respect for materials and an ethos of using things to their fullest. This sensibility continues in her use of found and repurposed materials while creating alien, unfamiliar objects.

Jocelyn’s work is grounded in an attentive approach to both craft and care, with hatched linework appearing as a recurring element in her organic forms—whether through quilting and sewing, crochet, knitting, embroidery, silkscreening, drawing, or gardening. She draws inspiration from the natural world and from weird fiction.

As of August 2025, Jocelyn completed the Contextual Summer Residency and exhibited new work in the Creative Detours exhibition. When not in the studio, she can often be found in her garden, usually befriending dragonflies."
