Dr. Goldie has prioritized a culture of inspiration and motivation as the foundation for innovation. Her leadership is focused on providing leading-edge excellence in teaching, scholarly research and creative practice to ensure AUArts graduates are critical and creative thinkers, and are ready to help solve problems, challenge norms and affect change in society.
An accomplished leader and academic, Dr. Goldie joined AUArts in 2022 as the Dean, Academic Programs, and has been responsible for the quality and delivery of all academic programming at the university. Dr. Goldie has led new curriculum exploration, revision and development, including the creation of a new undergraduate program and additional areas of study.
In response to student and community needs, Dr. Goldie has also fostered important external relations and partnerships to support a new Work-Integrated-Learning field placement course for Bachelor of Design students that established real-world working opportunities for AUArts students who are in demand within industry in Calgary and beyond.
Dr. Goldie has worked closely with AUArts’ academic leadership team and faculty colleagues to initiate new scholarly research and creative activities, including a faculty-led program championing and integrating equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility in pedagogical approaches and practices, and the launch of a Summer Residency Artist program that offers new opportunities to connect with community and AUArts alumni.
Before joining AUArts, Dr. Janis Goldie spent over a decade in the Ontario post-secondary system in academic administration. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Arts in Communication Studies from the University of Calgary, and a Bachelor of Arts in English, Rhetoric and Professional Writing from the University of Waterloo.
She was awarded the Edward J. Conroy Alumni Award for Excellence in Teaching, was co-director of the Lougheed Teaching and Learning Centre at Huntington University and has taught over 20 unique courses in various modes of delivery. Her scholarly research applies critical communication analysis to a range of discursive mediums. Recent books published include ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’: Teaching Dystopia, Feminism, and Resistance across Disciplines and Borders (2019, Rowan and Littlefield) and New Perspectives on the War Film (2019, Palgrave).
