Eugene Ouchi Memorial Scholarship

Eugene Ouchi was born in Vernon, British Columbia and studied both as a fine artist and graphic designer at the Alberta College of Art. His career in the graphic design industry spanned over 30 years and includes book design, information design and corporate and entertainment design. He was also an internationally recognized fine artist working as a printmaker and painter. The National Gallery of Canada selected 8 artists to represent Canada in the 36th Venice Biennale, Venice Italy. Eugene’s prints were included in this prestigious exhibition. He also exhibited in the British International Print Biennale, Bradford England; Graphics Canada, Art Gallery of Ontario; Canadian Printmakers, the Canadian Embassy, Washington, DC, and Alberta Artists in Japan /7 Cities in Japan, sponsored by Alberta Culture.

Eugene was a beloved instructor at AUArts and served as Chair of Visual Communications Design for many years. He was recognized as Professor Emeritus in 2014.

He passed away in March of 2010 after a short but courageous battle with cancer at the age of 66 years. He is greatly missed by his family, his colleagues and his former students.

The Eugene Ouchi Memorial Scholarship is a $1,200.00 application-based award for a second-year Visual Communications Design major. Applications are adjudicated based on "Merit of work and a clear articulation/demonstration of the student applicant's passion for design and a planned path toward a professional career in the field of design."
