The Apothecary

A curated group exhibition by BUMP Festival Arts Society

The Apothecary gathers a constellation of 13 Calgary based artists whose practices move through painting, photography, ceramics, textiles, sound, and installation. Across the exhibition, materials such as flora, leaves, cloth, and organic matter are activated alongside image, object, and ritual to form a collective inquiry into medicine in its broadest sense.

Medicine is expansive, and the ways in which we articulate ‘healing’ ‘cures’ and ‘antidotes’ are mired in secret histories, rarely ever being fixed. We believe questions and inquiries on health are emotional, cultural, spiritual, and deeply personal. It lives in the body, in memory, in grief and recovery, in care systems both formal and improvised. It appears through the archive of food, the residue of digital life, the weight of inherited trauma, and wider imprints of community and land.

Across still life paintings that confront body politics, photographic works that document intimacy and resistance, sculptures that echo microbial and ecological worlds, and vessels shaped through magic and repair, The Apothecary is where the strange, the experimental, and the deeply find each other.

Set within an underutilized Chinatown commercial space, we hope you find this exhibition to be a site of exchange, unfolding through new questions and encounters.

Join us for the opening reception of The Apothecary on the evening of April 17. There will be food and beverages at this event, and it is free and open to all. Visit us at 106–107, 111 3 Ave SE (Chinatown) from 6–9 PM. This venue is wheelchair accessible.
