KAIN: Salo-Salo Snack and Share V

A participatory, sensory-driven pop-up restaurant that transforms the gallery into a vibrant Filipino street fiesta.

KAIN (the direct Tagalog translation: “to eat”) is a participatory, sensory-driven pop-up restaurant that transforms the gallery into a vibrant Filipino street fiesta. Drawing from diasporic memory, communal gathering, and everyday cultural traditions, the installation uses food, play, and collective experience as forms of cultural expression and resistance. Rooted in the Filipino concept of kapwa, a shared sense of identity and connection, KAIN encourages audiences to move beyond passive observation and engage through taste, smell, touch, and social interaction. Here, the gallery becomes a place of encounter where art is not only viewed, but also shared, consumed, and performed.

This iteration, KAIN: Salo-Salo, reimagines the Bows Gallery space as a lively street food corridor inspired by Filipino night markets and fiestas. Beginning at 3 PM, the restaurant will feature a live interactive performance by AUArts student Thea Galang: Pabitin, a hanging installation filled with prizes that invites collective effort and playful competition. Afterward, guests are invited to spend the afternoon singing at the pop-up karaoke booth hosted by Baklabayan, and to learn more about democracy in the Philippines through the booth presented by Anakbayan Alberta and BAYAN Canada
