BIRDHAT/STARTREE Unveiling

TrépanierBaer is delighted to announce the unveiling of a major new sculpture by Calgary-based Canadian artist Ron Moppett (Dip '65 and Honorary MFA).

Commissioned by Hines BIRDHAT/STARTREE is in the public laneway at Two Park Central located in Calgary’s vibrant Beltline District at the corner of 11th Avenue and 4th Street SW. The unveiling will take place on Thursday, September 19th at 4:00 p.m. Prominent Calgary based Katie Ohe’s (Dip '60 and Honorary MFA) sculpture Three Tree will be unveiled at the same time.

Fabricated by Reggin Industries, Calgary, the sculpture is made of stainless steel and measures  approximately 3.5 meters high. The animated 15 colour polychrome sculpture represents a tree commonly found on a city boulevard. Using collage as the main compositional technique of the work, Ron Moppett’s “tree” is made of various signs and symbols ranging from a star and hat to a bird and a leaf. Each shape is coloured differently on each side. Moppett thinks of the sculpture as a tree in size but as a cityscape in scope.
