Jessica O’Connell is a convener, connector and collaborator who brings extensive experience and a commitment to arts advocacy.
Alberta University of the Arts is pleased to announce the appointment of Jessica O’Connell as Executive Director, External Relations, effective August 18.
O’Connell was selected after an extensive search and will lead the University’s government and community relations, fund development, alumni outreach and marketing and communications activities as the University heads into its centennial year in 2026.
O’Connell brings more than a decade of people leadership and relationship management experience to AUArts. President and CEO Dr. Janis Goldie described what made O’Connell the unanimous choice of the search committee. “Jessica’s commitment to relationship-first, community-centric practices makes her the ideal person to lead our efforts to connect with our community and celebrate the enormous impact of the more than 14,000 graduates of this institution, who have influenced art, design and craft practices in Alberta, Canada and across the globe over the last century. As we acknowledge the incredible legacy of what is now known as Alberta University of the Arts, we are also planning for the next 100 years, and Jessica’s experience in building partnerships and championing social innovation is exciting. We are delighted that she is joining us at this pivotal time.”
Jessica is a Calgarian who is returning to a Calgary-based post-secondary institution after serving as Acting Vice-President, University Relations at Athabasca University (AU). While maintaining her role as Director, Strategic Engagement, she oversaw a portfolio that included fund and business development, alumni, community engagement, communications, marketing and analytics. Prior to joining AU, she held several roles at the University of Calgary and United Way of Calgary and Area, which included external relations functions as well as experiential learning, public/private partnerships, social innovation and volunteer engagement.
