The Biennial is the only opportunity for individuals working in the ceramic field to participate in a major national exhibition reflecting the high quality and diversity of work currently being made in Canada. The exhibition was juried by Pierre Simon Doyen, Sally Michener, and Walter Ostrom and originated at the Gallerie d'art du Pare, Trois Rivieres, Quebec. It will travel to galleries in Montreal, Quebec City and Toronto in the spring and summer of 1991.

This year, 199 ceramists took part in the contest, entering a total of 507 works. During the preliminary selection, using slides submitted by the artists, the members of the jury selected 59 works representative of the current trends in Canadian ceramic art.

The jury, composed of Sally Michener, ceramist and instructor in the (3D) department of the Emily Carr College of Art and Design in Vancouver, Walter Ostrom, ceramist and head of the department of ceramics at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, and Pierre-Simon Doyon, art historian and professor at the Universite du Quebec a Trois Rivieres selected the works to be included in the exhibition as well as choosing the price-winners. A total of $18,000 in prizes will be awarded.
