Albert Oehlen

The Illingworth Kerr Gallery is pleased to announce a new exhibition of recent work by the renowned German artist Albert Oehlen.

Since the early 1970's Oehlen's work has traversed and disrupted the language, meaning and formal constructs of painting. Using humour he and colleagues like Martin Kippenberger, mined the reservoirs of bad taste and cheap surrealism in redefining the limits of figurative and abstract art. Slogans like, "some oils for painting, a good book, my radio and just hoping nothing happens" challenged the attitudes for art and have now bred an amazing companion body of work using the computer. These large brash graphics combine the abstract and figurative with a whimsy reminiscent of his earliest experiments with painting.

This showing in Calgary has been realized with the assistance of Patrick Painter, Inc. Santa Monica, California, and Gallerie Max Hetzler, Berlin. Curated by Ron Moppett.
