The City of Calgary Public Art Program, in collaboration with the Illingworth Kerr Gallery (IKG), is pleased to be offering a public art and social practice workshop series

Internationally renowned artists Alfredo Jaar, Tania Bruguera and Jeanne van Heeswijk and a third to be announced, will each present a public lecture and lead a weekend workshop for the a selected group of Calgary artists including Dick Averns, Alana Bartol, Kevin Jesuino, Taryn Kneteman, anne drew potter and Dawn van de Schoot.

Through the workshops, lectures and group discussions participants will be mentored by world renowned artists practicing in the field and provided with the tools, skills and in-depth understanding necessary to develop a project proposal and subsequent practice in socially engaged public art.

To complete the series, artists will design a project proposal that involves a community partner in the development and/or implementation of the project in some way. The proposals will then be exhibited at IKG for juried competition.

Each visiting artist will present on different aspects of public art and social practice. At the end of the series, participants will present their own project proposals in an exhibition, titled Experiments in Public Art, at the Illingworth Kerr Gallery, supported by the learning and mentorship gained throughout the workshops. These project proposals will be evaluated by a jury of stakeholder representatives, and the final project will be selected and implemented by the artist through The City of Calgary Public Art Program.
