CMagazine Lecture (and Workshop)
C Magazine editors Joy Xiang and Maandeeq Mohamed will present a talk on editorial ethics, and approaches to supporting Indigenous writers and artists. With a focus on their work at C Magazine, they will explore the possibilities and limits of refusal beyond representation politics. RSVP here.
Maandeeq Mohamed is a writer, editor and researcher living in Tkaronto. Engaging Black studies and related cultural production, she is deeply indebted to the generations of work around Black liberatory politics, poetics, and aesthetics. Currently, Maandeeq is the Online and Reviews Editor at C Magazine, as well as a PhD Candidate in English and Gender Studies at the University of Toronto.
Joy Xiang is a writer, born in Shanghai and based in Toronto, where she is currently Editor at C Magazine. She searches for where poetry might meet criticality might meet the charged liberation of dancing in dark rooms. Her work engages the meeting points of many realities, including desire, migration, material flows, and media nostalgia and futurity.
On Tuesday, October 31 from 1-3PM Joy and Maandeeq will also facilitate a workshop on art writing and pitching to publishers in the AUArts Boardroom. The workshop will introduce students to art writing strategies, voice, and editorial processes. Students will also respond to art writing prompts that explore different approaches to interpretation. There is limited participation for this workshop - students can register here.
