Yeisen Chang is a Cuban-born, Calgary-based artist and educator whose practice explores migration, memory, language, and belonging through video art, installation, and participatory storytelling. As the 2025 Newcomer Artist in Residence at Calgary Public Library, Chang develops community-engaged projects that weave personal narratives with public space and living archives. Recent and upcoming presentations include collaborative initiatives that activate libraries, streetscapes, and informal learning environments.
In the classroom, Chang teaches design fundamentals, Adobe Creative Suite, and art/design history with a student-centered approach that balances conceptual rigor and hands-on experimentation. Rooted in inclusive pedagogy, their courses invite learners to translate ideas across media—connecting research, craft, and community impact. Trained in drawing and printmaking and working primarily in digital media today, Chang’s work seeks to open generous conversations about displacement and home, and to equip students with adaptable creative tools for contemporary practice.
Yeisen's Courses
Design
Gain an understanding of visual communication design and the role of a graphic designer. Focus on building strong problem-solving and idea-generation skills through sketching, drawing, and hands-on exploration. You will learn how to apply the elements and principles of design with intention, as you take on creative projects that challenge you to communicate clearly, think critically, and design with purpose.
Introduction to Adobe Creative Suite
Learn the basics of the Adobe Creative Cloud suite of applications including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, and go beyond simply studying the software, to integrating good design. Work through a series of projects where you focus on how to properly capture, transfer, manipulate, and output images in a clear, concise manner while you apply your knowledge of design fundamentals for clean visual communication. As you work through the projects, you will figure out a digital workflow that makes sense for you and become more comfortable working in multiple programs at once.
